Items You Shouldn’t Buy at Costco

I’m an avid Costco shopper and, I suppose, I’ve always just assumed that you could get a deal on pretty much anything there.  Apparently, I was wrong.  Although most of the deals available at Costco are in fact deals, there are a few items that aren’t such a bargain.  This blog will address some of these “anomalies”.

As a general rule, it doesn’t pay to shop at Costco if your rate of consumption precludes you from using the entire bulk item prior to the expiration date.  Nate and I have run into this problem a few times with some of the bulk produce sold at Costco; notably, the enormous bag of potatoes.  While we almost always manage to use about half of the bag, the other half inevitably goes bad before we can use it.  Thus, it’d actually be cheaper to buy fewer potatoes from the grocery store.

Farm-raised tilapia is another bulk item that you won’t save on by purchasing at Costco.  Comparison-shopping has shown that this item can be purchased at a lower unit price from either Target or Wal-Mart.

For a few additional items you shouldn’t buy from Costco, as well as a few items that you should buy from Costco, check out this article entitled 4 Things Not to Buy at Costco, by Louise Tutelian.

If you know of any other items you won’t save on by buying from Costco, I’d love to hear about them!
